The Power of Honesty

Honest, in my humble opinion, is the most important thing a person can be. When we are honest we are free from deception. Lets face it, to lie is to mislead. When a lie is told someone is mistaken, or to put it as plainly as possible; someone is lost. Each single lies we tell blocks us off, brick by brick, from forming meaningful and lasting connections with any and all life. Deception causes us to lose friends that never where, to miss experiences. When we lie we lose sight of the vibrant and joyous life we deserve, and instead we turn to face a wall of deception.

Decide that honesty is worth the effort. Shake loose the lies that have kept you bound and limited.

Amazing things start to happen when you tell others (and yourself) the truth. The negative emotions we feel when tell lies start to disappear. The self righteous shenanigans of the ego begins to lose its power. The anxiety and fear of getting caught in our web of lies starts to fade away with every telling of the truth. The shame that used to keep us feeling like less and less each day, is replaced with healthy pride as we shatter through the lies that once kept us imprisoned.

Choosing to tell the truth, in all circumstances, is one of the most transformative decisions a person can make. You might be thinking that I am talking about what some would consider big lies, grand deceptions- and you would be half-way correct. I am also talking about the smaller lies we deem less important, the lies we may call small, inconsequential, or white. These lies are just as dangerous, because in the end all they are good for is keeping us from the fullness of life that can only come from the truth.

Every lie we tell, whether to ourselves or to others, removes us a little-bit-farther farther from the exuberant joy that life can bring. In deception we become embedded within the negative emotions that cause us to suffer. For those of you that know me you’ve probably gotten used to hearing me speak about the importance of treating others with the respect and honesty they deserve.

I speak from experience. I’ve been in that dark place where I felt that honesty wasn’t worth the trouble. Lies have a way of controlling you. Each lie costs you. You lose control as each lie funnels you down an ever-decreasingly narrow path. One day your decision making process has been completely overtaken by the necessity to uphold the deception.

I’ve been in that state of mind where to be honest would be to lose the upper hand. I’ve been held hostage by that persistent worldview that demands you don’t show weakness, you don’t express kindness, you don’t treat others as you’d like to be treated; you treat them as nothing more than passers-bye…. Holding stubbornly to an attitude that makes it impossible to build a meaningful relationship with anyone.

I have healed, and it is in large part due to committing to complete and total honesty to myself and all those I come in contact with.
