“Media is the nervous system of a democracy, if it’s not functioning well the democracy can’t function.”
–Jeff Cohen former MSNBC/Fox News Contributor
When false information is piped in and repeated often enough it begins to resonate with the masses. This is true regardless whether or not the information is accurate or complete. An echoing effect begins once the information starts to travel back from its farthest reaches.
“A lie told often enough becomes the truth.” –Vladimir Lennon
According to an article on gallup.com by Lydia Syaad titled ‘TV is Americans’ Main Source of News’ 55% of Americans turn on the Television for news on current events while just 21% look to the Internet and a mere 9% are reading print publications. These statistics would not have the same connotations if honest journalism was still the standard here in the West. We have plummeted so far from anything that even resembles an unbiased presentation of facts that I am amazed that we still call it “news”.
Rupert Murdoch is the founder, Chairman and CEO of Global Media Holding Company News Corporation, the world’s second-largest media conglomerate and its successors News Corp and 21st Century Fox. This massive media machine is estimated to reach over half of the worlds population. In America Murdoch’s most vocal and active mouthpiece is Fox News. Fox has repeatedly been discredited as a biased and intentionally manipulative source of information for decades. Although it is somehow still on the air and doing more damage than ever. Fox is consistently diverting attention from statistically verifiable threats by highlighting politically profitable issues and appealing to the emotionally charged cultural landscape. This is an obvious ploy that is meant to get you thinking in carefully contrived ways.
One such example of this is how Fox News has succeeded in ideologically streamlining the opinion of what it means to be an American. By creating the parameters by which the average American can or can not think- on any number of subjects- they have essentially created a manageable populace that will rarely go out of bounds on certain key subjects. The visceral, emotional responses that are the norm for the Fox News Actor have influenced the masses to behave the same. As social creatures that seek acceptance, these ideological parameters become self-perpetuating. Anomalous thoughts and behaviors that break from the group are policed and corrected by the majority. It is frighteningly Orwellian in it’s brilliance and simplicity. It relies on the psychological drive of the individual and a relentless repetition.
If the majority of the population becomes indoctrinated with intentionally misleading and manipulative reporting it would absolutely be the textbook end of democracy in America. Anything that falls short of the status-quo as set by the media machine will be deemed un-American. This is already happening in pockets all across the Nation and has been for some time. The good news is that these pockets never seem to coalesce into something larger and more terrifying.
Democracy relies on the ability of its citizens to make informed decisions on relevant matters. How can we do this when the information has lost its integrity through an intended deception? If the end result is anything beyond an unbiased reporting of the facts and only the facts so that we can, with sovereign minds, weigh in on the matter; it becomes something else entirely…. it becomes a means to an end. That end is for us to come to a predetermined conclusion. This is the antithesis to democracy. We must all become skeptical of the stations upon which we once put our trust and seek out second, third, and even fourth opinions if we want the whole truth. In order to preserve the integrity of a Nation we must purge the things which are contrary to the core values and essential beliefs of the Nation or suffer the transformation into something else entirely.
The American way is not the way of deception but a full and complete accounting of the truth no matter how inconvenient it may be. The American way is the way of truth, which is much broader than the narrowly opinionated rhetoric of Fox News.
